How many times have your friends and family asked you to LIKE a Facebook page?
This past week a friend requested me to LIKE her Facebook page, and I did to help her out. I was ‘LIKE’ number 792 and she wrote me a personal message to thank me for helping her launch her company. After a polite ‘you’re welcome’, I rolled my eyes as I knew that I had no real interest in purchasing or recommending her online makeup store (!!) and was not sure how my pushing the LIKE button helped her business, but hey, What are friends for.
The LIKE business is flourishing as companies are buying Likes by the thousands or using advertising tactics to get that LIKE number on their Facebook page to grow by leaps and bounds.
I am not going to go into a rant against buying Facebook LIKES. For all the reasons in the world read BusinessInsider on buying Facebook Likes.
To have 50,000 Likes on your corporate Facebook page or 450,000 followers on Twitter and zero interaction, is like speaking to an empty room with a recording of a thunderous applaud whenever you push a button, it’s pointless!
So Why does Facebook have a LIKE option?
Facebook, like Twitter, as well as the rest of the social media planet is not about quantity, it’s about quality. The infamous Facebook LIKE button was created for real interaction and real recommendations.
A company can advertise how awesome they think they are but when I hear it from my contacts, friends and people I trust, that’s a whole different story. When I LIKE a service or a Facebook page my friends should be able to use my opinion as a recommendation rather than the business using me as a number.
The only conclusion my friends would reach when they see that I gave a LIKE to a makeup company is, either someone hacked my Facebook account or there are certain things they didn’t know about me. Not one of my contacts will visit or purchase from a makeup company that I recommended more than they would trust my opinion on the best restaurants in China.
On the other hand, when I use a company or a service and have a positive experience, not only would I want to send a LIKE for the company’s sake, I want my friends to know that I actually recommend a specific business. If I read an amazing post and think my friends would also enjoy the story I want to be able to send an instant LIKE without having to search for a Facebook page.
One reason people are not LIKING every restaurant, store or author they encounter during the day is simply because they are usually on their mobile phone and do not have the patience to stop their day, open up Facebook, search for the company’s Facebook page and hit LIKE.

Mobile apps such as Foursquare and Instagram have gone viral simply because they are a one click check-in app. No Mayorship would be worth the trouble if one had to start looking for their location instead of an automatic “here you are”.
You walk into a store, a restaurant or a movie, open up Foursquare, push Check-In, sit back and let the app do the rest.
When it comes to Facebook Likes, the story is quite different. You walk into a store, restaurant or movie and would love to recommend it to all your contacts and friends but before hitting the LIKE button you have to open up Faceboook then search for the specific company’s Facebook page and only then have the option to press LIKE. In a mobile world where companies are developing apps that are based on fast and easy the Facebook LIKE has been left ‘For Sale’.

Hi Ari,
This looks like a brilliant application.
I’m just thinking about ways to introduce your app to local businesses. Obviously, I can’t create their Facebook App without being made an administrator, so I was thinking of ways to introduce your services and my services as a conversation starter.
Could I create a free QR code using the generator on the Visualead home page using their company logo and set a link to a dummy coupon page or their live Facebook page and then show them the marketing possibilities of dynamic qr codes matched up with visually attractive QR codes?
John
